htc touch - usb device not recognized wm6
I connected my htc touch wm6 to the PC via the usb cable and the ActiveSync "connect to" screen on HTC poped up (as usually) but it stuck there without managing to connect.
I unplugged the phone it and plugged it again.
From there on I was constantly receiving "usb device not recognized" and activeSync was doing nothing.
There is a lot talk on forums about this problem.
Before you start trouble-shooting, test first with a different mini USB cable.

at pag 87 of the manual there is an explanation that solve my problem that was just like you mantioned. At Star>configurations> 'guide' conections> USB for PC do not select the option "advanced network ... etc" in portugese this option is described as "Habilitar funcionalidades avançadas de rede"
